Background:
SETTING: A tokusatsu story, like Kamen Rider or Power Rangers. The setting is modern-to-near-future Japan. In the city of Seitei, bizarre things have become commonplace: Sometimes, monsters attack the city and its people for unknown reasons. After these attacks, sometimes people have traits like those of monsters themselves. The source of all this is unknown to only those who have met her: The Goddess of Salvation, who appears before those who are feeling the deepest, truest despair, and offers them a strange seed, and tells them to make a wish.

Those who make a wish on that seed will find that they have a new form. A monstrous form, with powers and abilities based on granting the wish they held. Those who simply wished for strength or to hurt others might have incredible strength, while someone who wished for money might be able to teleport to steal it, or create it from nothing. However, almost everyone who makes these wishes has their hearts consumed by the power, and become monstrous.

Those whose hearts are stronger, however, who can retain their sense of self despite the power, gain the ability to transform at will, and will become one of the Goddess’ generals, working to spread her will. Except for one, who stands up to fight against the monsters and the ones spreading them, to protect the people. Yayoi is not that one.

CHARACTER: Content warning for the following section: Transphobia, child abuse, alcoholism, homelessness.

Yayoi was born a boy. She also knew, early on, that she was not a boy.

Born to an extremely abusive household, Yayoi grew up in an extremely rough environment. Her father would regularly become violent while drunk, her mother was never around. At school, she was a frequent target for bullies due to her gender… until later in elementary school, when she broke a bully’s nose. Fighting back seemed to be the only way she could get anyone to leave her alone, but it was also sure to make everyone hate her.

She also struggled immensely with the idea of how the world simply wasn’t how she was told it was. She was told, as a child, that justice existed, but she never saw it. She was told that people were kind, and she never saw it. She was told that people who behaved badly would be punished, and people who were kind would be rewarded, but it never happened. So she became disillusioned, and hated the world the way it was. And on her fourteenth birthday, she ran away from home.

Having nowhere to go, she was homeless on the streets for a while. Here, she learned to steal what she needed to survive, but it was still rough going. Avoiding gangs, violence, cops, and getting everything she needed to live wasn’t easy, and before too long, she found herself in a back alley, starving, convinced she was going to starve to death there.

It was there the Goddess appeared before her. She offered her a wish, and Yayoi took it- Wishing for a just world. With their goals in alignment, she was given a new name, Fauna, and her transformed state, Night Wild. She was given a place to stay, and had allies in the other generals, Judge Riot, King Hades, and Sweet Stinger. Her role was to extend wishes to those who were outside of the Goddess’s range, but also, if a monster stopped being useful to the Goddess’s goals, to destroy them. Fauna took to her role well, as fighting was her main power and purpose. She crushed the Seeds of those who she fought, reverting them to human… unless they’d used too much of the Seed’s power, in which case, they’d retain traits of their monster form.

After a few years of this, a new person appeared. Somehow, that person had a Seed-based power, but was not one of the Goddess’ circle. Instead, they were destroying monsters that still were useful, to protect people, as a hero. This hero was called Elemental Knight, and Fauna’s primary job became to destroy Elemental Knight… which she never succeeded at. She drew more and more power out of her Seeds, to an unreasonable degree, which began to transform her body even in her human form.

After enough losses, Fauna begged the Goddess for more power. As a result, she went through something called ‘baptism’, where divine holy fire burned her entire body to nothing, and her soul was materialized as a human body in its place. She still retained her animal features from overusing her power, even in this state, however.

However, she began to harbor doubts if the harm she was causing was really worth it. If the destruction could really bring about justice. And at the same time, she befriended an older girl named Flora. They became fast friends, and Fauna was beginning to feel something strange in her heart… Until she overheard some people mocking Flora behind her back. She immediately transformed and attacked them, and Elemental Knight came to protect them, at which point it was revealed that Elemental Knight was none other than Flora, and Fauna’s own secret identity was revealed.

The two continued to clash, until finally, in the middle of the night, they had one final battle as Fauna threw all her confused feelings, her hurt and suffering, and tried to prove she was right. When Flora won, she accepted she was wrong, and joined Flora at her side as another hero, now turning against the Goddess to protect people from the destruction they caused.

Personality: Yayoi is a good person who has been failed by every single possible person and factor in her life.

As a result, she has come to have a very self-reliant attitude, and becomes angered very easily. She does not have much in the way of speaking skills, so she instead lashes out when things are hurting her emotionally. She knows the way the world “should be”, and is angered when it isn’t, because people are at fault. She’s extremely stubborn, and emotional, and prone to riding on first impressions that stick around forever.

Basically, she’s a hothead.

She firmly believes in justice and doing the right thing, but she’s emotional and easily fooled. If she likes someone, or has a first impression of someone as good, she’ll believe basically anything they say almost without question. On the other hand, if her first impression of someone is as a liar, she wouldn’t believe them even if they told her the sky was blue. It’s really hard to get her to change her opinion on someone, and then if you manage that, the new opinion is even harder to dislodge.

She truly wants to help people, and become a better person. She also wants to make up for her past crimes, but she doesn’t believe it’s truly possible. She’s a pessimist, and while in terms of fighting or standing up for herself she’s extremely brave, in terms of emotions or socially, she’s a coward.

She hates things that are too complicated, because she’s bad with anything that isn’t straightforward. She thinks the world is much more straightforward than people really give it credit for, and it’s people that overcomplicate it. She despises liars, but she’s also aware that lying can be necessary, and the two facts cause her immense turmoil.

She has no trust for people who are authority figures because of their job, but she’s ultimately a follower at her heart who devotes herself entirely to someone else as their supporter. She hates the police, but someone who earns her respect is someone she would follow without question.

Her social graces are beyond lacking. Even ignoring her tendency to solve problems with violence, she’s blunt, straightforward, can’t read the room, can’t understand subtlety, and hates ambiguity. If someone angers her, she goes straight for swinging her fists, and she has a tendency to move her body when trying to talk to people, because she can’t think well unless she does.

She’s a very physical person, who understands things better by doing. She’s always in motion, she can’t sit still at all. She likes running, and while she likes learning, school was basically her nemesis.

Fauna has a very fragile ego, so if you insult her about the things she’s actually sensitive about, she’s liable to start punching first. Even when she knows she shouldn’t, she can’t really stop herself, because her actions move faster than her thoughts. She doesn’t think things through… except once the fight has already started.

She’s actually far smarter than she seems, and than she herself believes. Though she thinks she’s stupid, she’s adept at thinking in very logical manners, and coming to surprising solutions. As a fighter, she tends to control the battlefield using her varied abilities, and strike at her enemies’ weakness, in a very tactical, calculated fighting style that doesn’t seem to fit her rash nature.

Outside of fights, she’s very impatient, always trying to take a straight line to whatever she’s thinking about at that moment. She is the kind of person who would solve a maze by bashing through the walls. For her entire time serving the Goddess, and even before, the way she was treated by people meant she had trouble thinking of herself as a person, and certainly not a person who would ever get any kindness. She ended up thinking of herself mostly as a tool for the Goddess’s world, and a weapon to destroy her enemies, and is only now having to try to reclaim her humanity and figure out what it means for her to be human. Her humanity is important, and she will fight tooth and nail to be acknowledged for it, but at the same time, she struggles with whether she feels like she really can be a person.

All this said, her biggest desire is nothing more than to be loved and accepted for who she is. However, she believes that this can never happen, due to her nature and due to the crimes she has committed in the past. If someone came after her for revenge, she would probably not fight back, thinking it was fair, and in Expiation, she doesn’t have any intention of disputing the crime she’s committed. Whatever she gets for what she did is what she deserves.

Abilities: ho boy. Mundane skills: She’s pretty good at pickpocketing, breaking locks, and has a fairly good amount of knowledge on how to live illegally, and she’s extremely good at fighting.

More magically, she has a device on her wrist that was made from her Seed that allows her to scan the area around her for monsters that share her same power source, or just project a local map, basically functioning as a Plot Radar. (I imagine the radar function would not pick up anything of use.) It can also make phone calls, somehow, when she has to communicate with Elemental Knight or other allies. Its primary use, however, is to let her transform into her various forms, which I’ll cover momentarily.

Without using her device, she can still transform between her human form, and a gray, lightly armored form. She can sometimes lose control of which form she’s in based on how emotional she is, and whether she views herself as a ‘human’ or a ‘weapon’ at that moment. Her armored form is essentially her ‘real’ self, and the human form a disguise, so even in her human form, she has heightened strength, durability, and senses. Her human form also has fox ears and a tail, due to her abuse of her powers.

By using different ‘cores’, she can swap between three forms (as well as two more once she achieves a certain level of self-actualization). Each form is an armored fusion between a nocturnal predator animal, and a job. Her base form is a fox onmyouji, which can use magic. Fire and ice to attack, weak barriers, and even exorcising light against ghosts and demons. This form has the least power, but the most versatility.

Her other forms are: A lion samurai, which is extremely powerful, but slow, and can control lightning and wields a lightning-shaped katana; and an owl ninja, which can blend into shadows, do short-range teleportation, make shadow clones, carry some amount in hammerspace, and throw knives and shuriken. (Many of her abilities are based on puns and homophones in Japanese, which she herself is unaware of.)

If she gets too emotionally distraught, she can unwillingly enter a berserk, fusion form of all three of her forms. She has immense power in this form, but she herself has no consciousness, a pure berserk form that wants to destroy everything around it. No special abilities, all strength.

Her final forms are ones she hasn’t accessed at the point of her app, but has the potential to in the future- A fox martial artist, and a fox miko. The martial artist has blades all over and is incredibly powerful, and the miko uses nine ‘tail’-shaped bits as remote control weapons of various elements. She can only get these forms after powerful determination and self-actualization.

If she switches forms to her owl or lion forms, then detransforms, her own human form’s animal features will switch to that animal as well, giving her extremely limited shapeshifting capabilities.

Her power has two major weaknesses. First, it’s drawn from her heart, so her power rises the more she believes in herself and what she’s fighting for, and plummets if she’s not feeling it. Second, there’s overuse- If she takes too much damage, she can be knocked out of her transformation. If she tries to transform again after having just been knocked out of her transformation, or if she uses the same form’s finisher twice in the same fight, the power of her Cores will ‘erode her soul’, and she’ll gain more animalistic/monstrous traits even in her human form. Eventually, if she does this too much, she will lose her human form entirely, and her monster form would be her body permanently.

(Sorry this got so long, I was trying to comprehensively cover everything.)

Inventory: - Transformation Divine Tool, Trith Brace (wrist-mounted device detailed above)
- Fang Cores (magatama-like items that she uses to transform)
- Three Seeds of Power (detailed in Setting. They would normally grant immense power to give someone the abilities to grant a wish made to them, but having been brought to a different world from the goddess that made them and losing any connection to her, they’re basically reduced to weird, inedible walnuts)
